"I Wish I Wrote That!" Wednesday

As an aspiring writer (and therefore, a voracious reader), I often find myself reading other authors and saying to myself "I wish I wrote that!" I'm sooooo impressed by an author's ability to construct words into meaningful and fresh sentences, that I'd like to highlight them here on my blog on Wednesday. **************************************************************************
Autobiography of a Family Photo
by Jacqueline Woodson

I move closer to him, press my nose against his neck. He smells of baby oil and sweat. For the moment, the four of us are silent. I would like to peel the amber skin away and drink in the gold beneath it.

I've read several books by Jacqueline Woodson, and something about this book seems different from the others I've read. It reminds me of The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros. It's more abstract than her other work, the narrator of the story doesn't even have a name, at least not yet she doesn't. I wonder what this Jacqueline Woodson was like when this book was written.

I wish I wrote that!
